Dr Chong Weng Ong

Dr Chong Weng Ong graduated with Honours from Monash University in 2004 and completed his Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine in 2011. Further time was spent as a Sleep Research Fellow at Monash Medical Centre in obstructive sleep apnea and obesity research. Dr Ong is also an Associate Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA).
Dr Ong has clinical interests in the management of patients with lung cancer / pulmonary nodules, sleep disordered breathing (e.g. obstructive sleep apnea), non-respiratory sleep disorders and interstitial lung disease. This is in addition to general respiratory medicine covering pleural conditions and asthma/COPD. He holds current public appointments at St Vincent’s Hospital in Respiratory & Sleep Medicine and previously also served more than a decade as a staff specialist in General Internal Medicine.
Currently, Dr Ong has responsibilities for reporting of sleep studies in the SVHM Sleep Laboratory and performing diagnostic bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS-TBNA) lymph node sampling for cancer and non-cancer indications at St Vincents Hospital Melbourne (SVHM Public). He is also an RACP accredited Advanced Training supervisor for both skills, TSANZ accredited for bronchoscopy & EBUS-TBNA and is responsible for actively training registrars in the public hospital. He undertakes regular ward service for the Respiratory Medicine Unit at SVHM.
Dr Ong is the site Principal Investigator for several clinical trials and Registries in the area of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin deficiency and Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis at the St Vincents Hospital campus. Suitable patients can be considered for entry into these trials.
Dr Ong has access to sleep studies, laboratory and home-based, in the public and private setting. Private sleep studies are usually performed through the Epworth Hospital laboratories (Richmond, Camberwell, Geelong), South Eastern Private and Mitcham Private.
Dr Ong is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association and Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ). He is a part of the selection committee process for new trainees entering Respiratory/Sleep Medicine Advanced Training in Victoria/Tasmania.
